Can the Cowboys salvage their season?

The day after the Dallas Cowboys lost to the Green Bay Packers 45-7, Jerry Jones made the executive decision to let Head Coach Wade Phillips go and allow Jason Garrett to take over.

Going into week 10, the Cowboys are 1-7 and are sitting dead last in the NFC East. A combination of poor defense, an aging offensive line, and a poor running game this season has contributed to the Cowboys downfall. The Cowboys are currently ranked 31st in the NFL in rushing yards per game, which does not help out the passing game. Now that QB Tony Romo is injured, the team is relying on QB Jon Kitna who is starting for the first time since 2008.

Romo is out for another 4-6 weeks with a broken collarbone. Romo was injured back in week 7 against the New York Giants on a play where his running back missed their blocking assignment and allowed for Romo to get sacked. Romo has developed into one of the better quarterbacks in the league since taking this team over in 2006. Romo was relied on this season to keep his team in games since the team struggled running the ball. The Cowboys lost each game by less than 10 points before Romo’s injury and since then, the Cowboys lost their next two games by a total of 56 points.

Can the Cowboys make the playoffs? Technically yes they can still make the playoffs if they win the last 8 remaining games on the schedule and get a little help from other teams in their league as well. The defense is going to need to step up along with the running game to help out Kitna otherwise this team is going to continue to lose games. In reality, the Cowboys need to focus on restoring this proud franchise and gain back some respectability by the end of the season.

Jerry Jones had high hopes for his team coming into this season as the Cowboys Stadium will be the host of the Superbowl this year. At this point, everything for the Cowboys has changed and now Interim Coach Jason Garrett has to get this team back on the winning track. Don’t forget that a few years ago there was a coaching controversy in Dallas between Wade Phillips and Jason Garrett on who should run the team. Garrett was thought of as a better head coaching fit for the Cowboys and now has his chance. Depending on how the Cowboys finish, will Garrett be back as the head coach next season or will Jerry Jones do a complete overhaul on this team?
